Richard Carlson is acknowledged as one of the top male tennis players in PHS history. In 1977, he played #1 singles at PHS, with the team ranking #7 in the nation. During that same year, Carlson was ranked #1 in Northern California and #15 in the nation. In 1978, he was the NCS Doubles Champion, playing on a PHS team that ranked #5 in the nation. He was also ranked #9 in Northern California and in the top 75 in the nation. In 1979, Carlson played #1 singles at PHS and was ranked #1 in Northern California and #33 in the nation.

He went on to play at San Jose State and authored Don't Sweat the Small Stuff, a NY Times best seller with 26 million copies sold.
