James Danielson

JAMES DANIELSON
PHS CLASS OF 1981 

James graduated in 1981 and was a 3-sport star in football, soccer, and track.       

In Football, James was a 3-year varsity starter. He was Piedmont’s first soccer style kicker, kicking a 40-yard field goal in a game against Albany. He led the team in interceptions his junior and senior years, while having one game with 4 interceptions his junior year.

In Soccer, James was a 3-year varsity starter. After his MVP junior year, James led the Piedmont team to its first North Coast Section Championship appearance, while earning Piedmont's first North Coast Section Individual Player honor in 1981. James received the Coaches Award his senior year. His PHS soccer coach, Don O’Connell has stated James would have very easily been a 4-year varsity member in soccer if PHS had a team his freshman year.

James was a 4-year varsity member in track. He was a 3-time Optimo winner during those 4 years. He broke the school record for the Triple Jump his senior year.

James was distinguished as team captain and a 1st Team All-League recipient in each sport his junior and senior years. He received 10 total varsity letters at Piedmont High. James was distinguished as Athlete of the Year for the PHS graduating class of 1981, He went on to play soccer at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned his Bachelors of Art Degree in Social Science.


Georgia Hill

GEORGIA HILL

A 2013 graduate, Georgia Hill lettered in both softball and basketball at PHS. In softball, Georgia earned 1st Team All-League honors four times, including WACC League MVP, 3rd Team All East Bay and 1st Team All State her senior year. She was voted Co-Captain, team MVP and team Offensive Player of the Year three times and was the starting pitcher each of her four years on varsity. Georgia shares or holds over 20 unofficial softball records, including career Home Runs (26), RBI’s (150), Hits (143), Batting Average (.491), Slugging Percentage (.921), RBI’s in a game (8), RBI’s in a Season (48) and home runs in a double header (3). Georgia’s most impressive and improbable record came in her first home game as a freshman where she hit a home run in her first two plate appearances. In her one year of varsity basketball, Georgia received the Most Inspirational Award. After two years of playing softball at The College of Wooster, Georgia ranked among the top five in 11 softball school records, breaking four her freshman year, including the single season home record with six. Georgia transferred from the College of Wooster to the University of Arizona, where she graduated in Spring 2018 with a History and Marketing degree.


Jon Minor

JON MINOR

Jon graduated PHS in 1983, earning three varsity letters in basketball. Jon was a dominant 6’6” starting center his junior and senior years, earning 1st Team All-League honors and Alameda County Athletic Conference (ACAL) Player of the Year both seasons. He also received the Optimo Award his senior season as the team’s Most Valuable Player. Jon continued his basketball career at UC Davis.


Lauren Barbieri

LAUREN BARBIERI

Lauren is a 2001 PHS graduate. A Track & Field and Cross Country standout, Lauren was named the Track & Field MVP all 4 years at PHS. She won multiple league titles, competed in the North Coast Section championship meet in the 800m, high jump, triple jump, 300m hurdles, 4x100 relay, and 4x400 relay. In her senior season she competed in the California State Championship meet in the 300m hurdles. Lauren broke PHS records in the Triple Jump, 4x400 relay and 100m hurdles. During her senior year she was also PHS Student Body President. After PHS Lauren competed in both Cross Country (2 years) and Track & Field (4 years) at UC Berkeley where she recorded an All Time Top 10 time in 3000m Steeplechase and was named Academic All-Pac 10.

After graduating from UC Berkeley, Lauren earned her MBA from UCLA business school, and has had a long career as recycling and waste consultant. She still loves running marathons and triathlons, and spending time being active outdoors with her husband, Mike, and children, Rian and Walter. She and her family now live in Truckee.



Devin Brown

DEVIN BROWN

Devin graduated from PHS in 2009 and was a dynamic athlete in football, basketball and baseball for the Highlanders. On the Gridiron, he was a three-year starter on both sides of the ball. As a senior, he led the State with 13 interceptions and earned 1st Team All-League honors, All-Area by both the San Francisco Chronicle and Contra Costa Times, and was named to the All-State 1st Team Defense by MaxPreps. Additionally, he received All-League in basketball in 2008 & 2009. After graduation, Devin took his athletic talents to the University of Massachusetts football program where he was a UMASS Scholar Athlete of the Year.


Kerri Roemer

KERRI ROEMER

Kerri graduated PHS in 1999, earning 11 varsity letters in Tennis, Basketball, Track & Field, and Softball. 

She was named an “athlete of the season” in 1996 and became the first Piedmont player to win the girl’s tennis singles league title in 15 years.  She led the team to NCS playoffs in each of her four years.  In 1997, Kerri and her sister, Kristi, led the varsity team to win the first ever CIF/USTA NorCal Invitational.  As team captain in 1998, she was a leading player on the ACCAL championship team and was presented the CIF sportsmanship/citizenship award.    

Kerri was consistently achieved a singles ranking in the girls’ USTA Northern California junior circuit and in 1998, Kerri earned a USTA national ranking of 228 for the girls’ 18 singles division. 

Kerri continued her tennis career by joining UC Davis women’s tennis team in 1999 and was awarded the Division II Western Conference Rookie of the Year in 2000.  She was named team captain her senior year. 

In addition to her PHS tennis accomplishments, Kerri was a starter on the varsity girls’ basketball team where she played both guard and forward, earning Honorable Mention All-League in 1997.  She also helped the team to a historic 1st round win at NCS playoffs in 1998.  Kerri ran track her freshman year, competing in the 800 meters and hurdles.  During sophomore and junior years, she joined the varsity softball squad where she hit lead-off and defended center field.

Georgia Hill

A 2013 graduate, Georgia lettered in both softball and basketball. A standout softball player, Georgia earned 1st Team All-League honors four times, team MVP three times and was named West Alameda County Conference (WACC) League MVP, 3rd Team All-East Bay (East Bay Times) and 1st Team All-State (Cal-Hi Sports) her senior year. Georgia played two years at The College of Wooster, where she broke four team records her freshman year, including home runs in a single season.

Jeremy George

JEREMY GEORGE
PHS CLASS OF 2009

George, a 2009 PHS graduate, earned varsity letters in Football, Soccer and Baseball. He was named to the “2009 Top 100 High School Athletes” list by the East Bay Times. In Football George was selected twice to the 1st team BSAL All-League team (junior and senior years). He was the team captain both in his junior and senior years as well as the team MVP his senior year.

George was a four (4) year varsity member in soccer. He was a two (2) time 1st team All-League; two (2) time team captain; and two (2) time team MVP in both his junior and senior years. He helped lead his team to the NCS finals three times (2007-2009). In baseball George earned honors at a 2nd Team All-League and team defensive MVP. He was a key member of Piedmont’s historic first NCS Baseball Championship in 2008.

George went on to UC San Diego where he captained the club soccer team to the Open Division National Championship in 2011. He graduated with in Management Science with a Minor in Business. George currently lives in New York City where he works for a data software startup running the Client Development team.

Heather Gibson

Heather Gibson
PHS CLASS OF 1998

Gibson, a 1998 PHS graduate, earned three (3) varsity letters in Cross Country, two (2) varsity letters in Track, and one (1) varsity letter in water polo. She began cross country as a sophomore where she led the team to a third place in the NCS finals and placed 25th in the state. In her junior year, Heather led the cross-country team and dominated the ACCAL Cross Country league by winning every league race where she competed. She set a new course record in the league finals at the Joaquin Miller cross country course shattering the old record by almost 30 seconds; a record that stood for many years. Her course record helped the team win the league title that year. Gibson continued her winning ways at the NCS finals, winning the championship by 30 seconds. Her victory led the PHS women’s team to second place in NCS which also qualified the team for the state championship meet. At state, she placed 6th with a time of 19:38, leading the PHS women’s team to 6th place at State. Heather was injured at a running camp the summer after her Junior year and was unable to repeat her accomplishments in X-C that fall as a senior. She still placed 15th at the NCS meet (2nd on her team). Gibson was a three (3) time All-League recipient from 1995-1997 and additionally was selected to the 1996 All-NCS team. Heather ran the 3200 in track at PHS, qualifying for the Meet of Champions in the springs of 1997 and ’98. She earned an athletic scholarship to attend U.C. Davis. At U.C. Davis Gibson continued to excel in X-C and track, becoming a four (4) time All American, twice in cross country and twice in track. At UC Davis, Heather helped the Aggies win the cross country CCAA championship and qualify for the DII NCAA national championships all four years. In 2000, Heather was a big part of UCD’s 3rd place overall D II national finish, placing 20th (2nd on her team) and earning her first All American honors. UCD again placed 3rd nationally in 2001, with Heather placing 3rd on her team and 25th overall. She was voted MVP of the cross-country team in 2000 and 2001. In track, Gibson qualified in the 5k for the NCAA DII National Championships in 2000. In 2001, the NCAA finally decided that the steeple chase was no longer “too dangerous” for women to run. She dominated the CCAA in the steeple chase and 5k in 2001 and 2002. At the CCAA championship meet in 2002, she won both the steeple chase (setting a new record in the event) and the 5K. She qualified for the NCAA DII National Championships in both 2001 and 2002 in the steeplechase. She placed 3rd nationally in 2001 and 2nd in 2002, earning All-American honors both years. In addition to being chosen MVP of the women’s track team those years, she was also voted “most inspirational” by her teammates in 2002. She furthered her education at the Santa Clara University School of Law, graduating in 2005. However, Heather continued competitive running during and after law school. She qualified for and competed in the 2004 US Olympic trials in the steeplechase. After law school, she focused on the 10K. She placed 9th at the USATF championships in Indianapolis in 2006, qualifying as an alternate for the US Team for the Pan American games. In 2008, she focused on the Olympic Trials. In the spring of 2008, she ran an “A” time putting her in the top 22 female 10K runners in the country and qualifying her for the 2008 US Olympic trials. Gibson became an attorney licensed to practice in California, and in 2012 after working for several law firms, started her own law firm in Santa Clara, focusing on fighting health insurance companies who do not pay their members' medical bills even when they should be covered under the applicable policies. She received an outstanding service award from the Santa Clara County Trial Lawyers Association, and now litigates in state and Federal courts, and has successfully taken numerous cases to trial. Gibson is married to Jon Burke with two children: a son, Thomas and daughter, Jaye.

Greg Lee

GREG LEE
PHS CLASS OF 1999

Lee, a 1999 PHS graduate, earned four (4) varsity letters in tennis. During that time, he helped lead the team to three ACCAL championships, one ACCAL team runner-up, and to the 1998 Northern California CIF finals. He is a 1-time ACCAL singles champion, 1-time ACCAL doubles champion, and 2-time ACCAL singles runner up to his older brother Garrett Lee. He concluded his high school tennis career with an undefeated season in 1999. After high school, Greg attended UC Davis where he played #2 singles and #2 doubles his freshman year and #1 singles and #1 doubles his remaining three years. In his collegiate tennis career, he was a 4-time All-American. During the summer after his junior year, Greg earned a professional ranking on the ATP Tour. In 2003, he received the distinction of being named UC Davis Male Athlete of the Year among all UC Davis varsity sports, receiving the prestigious Babe Slater Award. He was also the recipient of a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, which is given to the top 16 male student-athletes among all divisions in the sport in the nation. In 2011 he was inducted into the UC Davis Athletics Hall of Fame. His tennis career also included earning United States Tennis Association (USTA) Northern California open rankings as high as number one in doubles and number two in singles. He played on league teams winning several Northern California championships and moving on to compete in the USTA National team tournament, where his team has made it as far as the finals, and where his victories include players ranked as high as 50 in the world. He also served as the assistant tennis coach for one year at UC Davis and for two years at UC San Diego. Greg went on to obtain his master’s degree in computer science from UC San Diego in 2006. He has been working full-time at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) since 2006, where he is devoted to helping scientists make sure their simulations run correctly and efficiently on LLNL’s supercomputers. He is the primary developer of the Stack Trace Analysis Tool (STAT), a 2011 R&D100 award winner, and has authored or co-authored dozens of publications in conference proceedings and journals. Greg currently resides in Pleasanton, California. In 2008 he married his wife Nancy whom he met at UC Davis, where she competed on the UC Davis Women’s Tennis Team. In 2015, Greg and Nancy welcomed their son Andrew into the world.

Matt McGrath

MATT MCGRATH
PHS CLASS OF 1988

McGrath, a 1988 PHS graduate, earned three (3) varsity letters in football and baseball and four (4) varsity letters in basketball. In football Matt earned awards as a 1st Team All-League Wide Receiver; 1st Team All-League Free Safety; Oakland Tribune Prep of the Week; Team MVP; and East Shore Athletic League Player of the Year. During his time on the team they made the NCS playoffs and ended a 10 year losing streak to Miramonte. In basketball, McGrath was selected as the team MVP. He was selected as a team captain his senior year to the football, basketball and baseball teams. In addition to athletics, Matt was selected as the senior class president, 1988 Male citizen of the year and senior athlete of the year. McGrath continued to Princeton where he played two years for Princeton Football and continues to be an avid coach and advocate for youth sports.
